Our vision at Melius is to help eradicate barriers within education amongst new immigrants and refugees who are struggling with acclimating to a new academic environment. Our goal at Melius is to provide these students with mentorship and guidance that will aid them in achieving their academic pursuits by offering personalized mentorship.
The problem: Lack of sufficient academic guidance in refugee youth
According to recent research, refugees often describe the lack of proper guidance and having limited access to information as being deterrents to navigating Canada’s educational system. Furthermore, refugees experience far lower rates of post-secondary completion in comparison to other youth in Canada. Furthermore, research also indicates that refugee youth struggle far more during secondary school and are more likely to drop out of school compared to other youth. This lack of access to higher education contributes to limited social and economic mobility, or downward occupational mobility, leaving many refugees experiencing unemployment, underemployment, and lower incomes, in comparison to other other Canadians.
The solution: Mentorship
Melius Mentorship hopes to combat this by matching refugee/immigrant students with mentors who are accomplished University students to assist them in the process of navigating Canadian post-secondary educational system. We aim to do this once gain via personalized mentorship that will be tailored to each youth’s academic goals and through our one on one personally tailored mentorship program, we aim to provide free scholarship application advice, University application advice and program information, career mentorship, information regarding volunteer and extracurricular activities, and free tutoring.
Our vision extends to all students from underprivileged backgrounds.
For underprivileged youth, especially in inner-city Surrey areas, we hope to offer one on one mentorship with University students and also aim to provide free tutoring in subjects such as mathematics, english, biology, physics and chemistry.
