Meet Our Mentors!

Melius Mentorship Network is made of a network of students from The University of British Columbia!

Sohat Sharma

Picture

Sohat is a second year medical student at the University of British Columbia. His academic interests lie in translational research and public health policy. Outside of Melius Mentorship Network, he is the Executive Director of a youth-run data driven public health organization called Global Cure Foundation and is involved in Lung Cancer Research at Vancouver General Hospital.

Yaksh Shah

Yaksh is a first year medical student. Yaksh is a firm believer in equality of opportunity and thus hopes to bridge the educational gap amongst students in  Canada. Outside of Melius Mentorship Network, Yaksh volunteers with CNIB and enjoys sports such as soccer and basketball.

Kaya Frese

Kaya  is a 4th year Microbiology and Immunology student at the University of British Columbia. Outside of academics, Kaya is defined by her involvement in community outreach and research. As an executive member of UBC HOPE, she facilitates collaboration with homeless shelters in the Downtown Eastside. At Quandt Labs, she practices experimental procedures related to ongoing projects targeting Multiple Sclerosis progression. Most of Kaya's other time is spent being a homebody: reading thrillers and playing board games with friends!

Alex Schramm

Alex is a fourth year Behavioral Neurosciences student at UBC. He is currently working with the Social Health Lab here at UBC to research the effect of smartphone use on well-being and sleep during COVID-19. He is also volunteers as a stretcher bearer for Vancouver Whitecaps FC and with Point Grey Private Hospital. In his free time, Alex loves to play soccer and go on adventures/hikes!

Aysan Dehgani

Aysan Dehghani is an undergrad political science student at UBC and aspires to become an international lawyer. She hopes to work in immigration law, and currently, journalism is her passion as she seeks to change the stance on current issues through a global perspective.

Shannon Dhindsa

 Shannon is currently a fourth-year student at UBC Vancouver, and is studying Kinesiology in the health science stream! . She spends most of her time on  academics but during her free time, you can find me on the pitch as a UBC softball athletic therapist and spending time with my dog. She looks forward to making connections and using her past experiences as a Melius Mentor.

Sophia Provenzano

Sophia is currently in her 4th year of Honours Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences at UBC. She is involved in the UBC community as a SCI team peer program leader, where they organize events to provide resources for academic and professional growth to science students, and as the secretary for UBC Japan Association. She also works seasonally at Columbia Outdoor School, where she supervises spring and summer outdoor education programming for kids.

Rishav Singh

Hello, my name is Rishav and I am a recent UBC graduate from the Integrated science program. In my free time, I enjoy going for a run around Stanley Park and weight lifting. I am currently doing full time research in epidemiology at BC Children's Hospital.

Parsa Moheban

​Parsa is a third year Biomedical Engineering student specializing in Biomechanics and Biomaterials. He is a sub-team lead of BioMod at UBC, but otherwise enjoys topics relating to public health, biotechnology, and software engineering. When not on campus, Parsa is usually with his friends or catching up on schoolwork. He looks forward to applying his experiences in engineering towards being a mentor.

Muhammad and is a second year commerce student at UBC Sauder School of business. These past few years, he was actively involved in UBC campus community where he worked to improve the lives of other individuals around him. He is hoping to specialize in finance with a concentration in sustainability. In his free time, Muhammad loves to play soccer, cricket, video games, and likes to spend quality time with friends. ​

​Umar is an undergraduate engineering student at UBC. He has an avid interest in all things engineering but a particular interest in machine learning, robotics, and bioinformatics. Umar is currently the electrical lead on UBC Bionics and a dry lab member on UBC iGEM. In his spare time, Umar loves to play pickup basketball!

Tamasha is a fourth year Nursing student at UBC; passionate about immigrants and refugee health outcomes and experiences. In her free time, she likes reading autobiographies.

Bavneet Dhillon

Bavneet is a final year Integrated Sciences student at the University Of British Columbia where he specialized in Pharmacology and Cellular Physiology & Anatomy. Outside of his studies, he enjoys being active in the community. Some of his community involvement includes working with the Canadian Red Cross as a Client Services Representative with their medical equipment loan program. He is also cofounder of the South Asian Public Health Initiative in which he has partnered with the Heart and Stroke foundation on a project to help improve health outcomes within the South Asian Community. He is also the Director of External affairs for the youth-run public health organization Global Cure. Within Melius Mentorship, he is involved with our external affairs side. In his free time Bavneet enjoys mindful journaling and reading. Some of his recent recommended reads include ‘Atomic Habits’ and ‘Never Split The Difference’.

​Nima Toussi

Nima is a student at the University of British Columbia studying behavioural neuroscience and physiology. He's interested in how behavioural neuroeconomics concepts influence health-centered decision-making. He hopes to apply these concepts to change how decision-makers in health-related areas perceive and implement solutions. Outside of Melius Mentorship Network, Nima enjoys volunteering as a mentor with the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) and working with the Doan Research Team at BC Children's Hospital. Nima can usually be found in one of the several cafes he's adopted as his office (or, if weather permits, playing spikeball).

Agustina Florespitton

Agustina is a fourth-year civil engineering student at UBC. She is the captain of Third Quadrant Design, an engineering design team that is constructing a net-zero building on UBC's campus. During her time at university, she has been an active member and leader of multiple student organizations with a particular focus on sustainability and equity. In her free time, she loves trying new coffee shops, meeting new people, and enjoying Vancouver's scenic views.
 

Sophia He

Sophia is a third-year Arts student studying International Relations, an interdisciplinary program that combines political science, economics, and history coursework. At UBC, she has been involved with the Arts Undergraduate Society and UBC's language exchange program, UBC Tandem. In her free time, she loves to read, play and listen to music, and listen to podcasts. She is so excited to help elucidate the university system for her peers!

Jing Tan

Jing is a second-year Mechanical Engineering student at UBC. She worked as a car mechanic trainee, providing her some insights into mechanical engineering and basic car maintenance knowledge. She was also involved with a local sustainability start-up focusing on youth engagement. She enjoys writing, reading, and hiking in her free time!  ​

Harshal Dayani

Harshal is a second year Health Science student at uOttawa. He hopes to be able to pursue medicine and work as a physician in the future. He has experience shadowing a physician and clinical experience. He is a second degree black belt in taekwondo and is currently working on certifying to become a lifeguard.

Kian Torabiardakani

Kian is a second year Health Sciences student at McMaster University. His interests lie in public health, methods of evidence synthesis such as systematic reviews and guideline adaptation/development – currently working on development of Opioid Risk Mitigation strategies and developing methods to find inconsistencies between guidelines. Besides research, Kian volunteers at the PACU and Emergency Department of McMaster Children’s Hospital. In his free time, Kian loves to play football (aka soccer) and spend time with family and friends.

Puneet Sidhu

Puneet is currently in her fourth year of Health Sciences at McMaster University. As an executive member of HOSA McMaster, she represented her university as a sports medicine competitor at the International Leadership Conference. She has also committed her time to the HELP program at the William Osler Health system, which aims to provides physical, emotional and social support to seniors. In her free time, she enjoys swimming and listening to music!

Daniel Jiang

Daniel Jiang has just finished his 4th year at UBC studying integrated sciences integrating pathology and physiology. He loves to hike, play basketball and explore the nature side of BC while he's not studying for his courses in school. 

Cameron Leong

Cameron is a first year medical student at the University of British Columbia. He also obtained his BSc in Immunology and Neuroscience from UBC, where he graduated with distinction and as a Trek scholar in the top 5% of students in his class. Additionally, he has a diverse research background, with experience in basic neuroscience research, clinical research, and housing research. During his free time, you can usually find Cameron training for a powerlifting competition or dancing bachata.

Noelle Thundathil

My name is Noelle and I’m a fourth-year Bioinformatics student enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program at UofC. As a member of Melius Mentorship, my aim is to offer opportunities and assistance to immigrant students adapting to the Calgary community and guiding them as they shape their aspirations. I am thrilled to be part of this initiative, working towards establishing a nurturing space for younger students to flourish and confidently seek support for their future endeavours!

Jana Mahmoud

Jana is a second-year Life Sciences student at the University of Toronto, majoring in Neurosciences and Immunology. With a keen interest in unraveling the intricate workings of the human brain, she passionately delves into her research at the renowned Lefebvre Lab (SickKids Hospital) where she investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neuronal degeneration utilizing mouse models to uncover crucial insights. As Hackathon Director of UTRA Hacks, a premier Robotics Hackathon, Jana showcases leadership in driving transformative technological advancements. Beyond her academic pursuits, she immerses herself in discovering hidden gems of coffee culture, watching K-dramas, and empowering others as a dedicated swim instructor.

William

William is a UBC alumni who graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience & Cellular Physiology. He hopes to obtain admission into UBC’s dual degree programme, combining a Doctor of Medicine (MD) with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). His passions lie in advancing science so that the field of medicine can be advanced. During his undergraduate he participated in four laboratories as a research assistant and is now working full time at BC Cancer Research Centre. Additionally, he is an active mentor for UBC science students and offers a free tutoring service in areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry, and MCAT topics. William enjoys fitness through social weight-lifting and cardio exercise through cycling.
